Michal Wojnicz, Inhaber einer Bücherei und Buchsammler, dem nachgesagt wird, jedes Buch zu finden, reist nach Italien, um hier für einen Kunden den dritten Band einer Enzyklopädie zu kaufen. In der Villa Mondragone ersteht er das Buch, aber gleichzeitig entdeckt er auch noch eines, was seine ganze Aufmerksamkeit erregt. Auch dieses kann er den Händlern abkaufen. Mit seinem wertvollen Schatz reist er nach London zurück. Hier will er sofort das neue Buch untersuchen. Er wird jedoch von seiner Frau Ethel wenig unterstützt, denn diese ist mehr an Politik als an alten Büchern interessiert. Ethel Wojnicz gehörte einer Gruppe an, welche sich die „Gesellschaft der Freunde der Freiheit Russlands“ nennt und regelmäßige Treffen in seinem Haus abhält. Sogar die Tochter von Karl Marx, Eleanor Marx gehörte dieser Gruppe an. Michal, der selbst Flüchtling eines sibirischen Lagers ist, arbeitet auch mit den Genossen zusammen, doch sein Lebensinhalt sind die „Bücher“ geworden. Er will und kann nicht mehr politisch aktiv sein. So entfernen sich die beiden Eheleute immer mehr voneinander, was schließlich dazu führt, dass Michal nach Amerika auswandert. Frankfurt, 2012. Der junge Journalist Paul Zimmermann stößt durch Zufall auf einen Bericht über das Voynich-Manuskript und er wittert endlich seine Chance. Als „graue Maus“ war er bisher in der Redaktion des „Frankfurter Abendblattes“ tätig, aber nun bekommt er die Chance seines Lebens: Er darf um die Welt reisen, um das Leben des Michal Wojnicz zu erkunden und auch mehr über das sagenumwobene Manuskript zu erfahren. Sein Chef gibt ihm die Erlaubnis nach London, Polen und in die USA zu reisen. Zimmermann ist am Ziel seiner Träume. Endlich kann er beweisen, dass er mit zu den besten Journalisten gehört. Er reist nach London. Hier recherchiert er das Leben und die Ehe der beiden: Ethel und Michal Voynich. Er reist nach Polen und erfährt, was mit dem jungen Michal passiert war: seine Festnahme, seine Verbannung nach Sibirien und seine Flucht. Und schließlich reist er nach Amerika und erfährt dort die neuesten Erkenntnisse um das berühmte Voynich-Manuscript. Und dann gibt es noch den dritten Schauplatz des Romans Er spielt zunächst zu einer unbekannten Zeit und an einem unbekannten Ort. Später wird aufgelöst, um welche Zeit und welchen Ort es sich handelt. Ein Medicus und seine Tochter schreiben und zeichnen ein Buch in der Hoffnung, helfen zu können. Da alle anderen Mitglieder der Familie von einer heimtückischen Krankheit hingerafft wurden, bemüht sich der Vater um die Erstellung eines medizinisches Fachbuches. Die beiden leben in ärmlichen Verhältnissen und als der Vater stirbt, versucht die Tochter, die das Lesen und Schreiben nur in den Anfängen gelernt hat, dem Buch einen Inhalt zu geben... Teile dieses Romans sind frei erfunden, anderes wiederum recherchiert.
