Product Details
- We are happy to introduce to our readers the Mehlika Hanım Family, Nahir Sırrı's last novel, which was written in 1959, a year before his death, and entrusted to Tahir Alangu, and which remained in the drawers for years! Nahid Sırrı tells the story of an interesting section in the Mehlika Hanım Family from the life of one of the families who lost their privileges after the Republic while they were wealthy during the Ottoman period. The family's mother, Mehlika Hanım, is overwhelmed by the loss of reputation and wealth; His wife, Şevket Bey, sits in the cafe all day, one of her sons goes to school and the other lives in Şişli with the pocket money she receives from a woman with whom he has a romantic relationship. Academy student Neşide, who saw Şevket Bey by chance, wants to draw a picture of him as a former Eastern beggar, which changes the face of the family. Ms. Mehlika begins to think that her husband, who reflects this orientalist image so much, can really beg. Nahid Sırrı, who belongs to the same class as Mehlika Hanım's family, constructs the sociology of the group he lives in through the transformation and alienation experienced by an old Ottoman family who had the feeling that they could approach their former glory by begging, with a critical perspective on the art of painting as well as experiences from their own lives. Nahid Sırrı, who has a serious painting collection and has many articles on painting, not only uses the clichés of orientalism in this novel, but also bends them with his sharp irony. Mehlika Hanım Family presents a deep portrait of the spirit of Istanbul and the period, woven with humor, with its unforgettable characters written by Nahid Sırrı. Show more
