- ドイツ人建築家ブルーノ・タウト(1880-1938)は1933年に来日し、約3年半日本に滞在した。それ以前のタウトは、自然や宇宙に向き合い、色彩豊かで使い易いデザインを提唱し、ベルリンを中心に多くの住宅作品を残していた。一方、日本では建築の仕事にあまり恵まれないなか、高崎の工芸指導所において、専門外の工芸品製作に取り組む機会を得る。タウトは地場の素材と伝統技術の積極的な活用を通して、漆工、木工、竹工、染織など、わずかな期間に数百点以上の工芸品を生み出した。それらは実用的で無駄がなく、簡素な美しさがあった。タウトは、風土に残る純粋なものを愛する、という自身の明確な価値観を、建築のみならず工芸分野にも適用したのではないか。 本書では、まずタウトデザインの工芸品を、益永研司氏の撮り下ろしの写真でたっぷりと紹介。タウトの建築になぞらえて、鮮やかな色彩空間で捉えた工芸品の数々は、これまでとは違う新たな表情を見せる。また、日本で唯一の弟子と呼ばれた故水原徳言氏が記した文章を、当時の記録写真や解説を交えて掲載し、タウトの日本滞在時の素顔や実情を細かく伝える。また、タウトの日記や記録などもひも解きながら、彼が尊重していた日本文化とは何かを探る。さらに論考では、彼のベースとなる建築作品とそこに貫かれた思想を紹介し、そこから見える工芸観を詳らかにする。昭和初期の日本の工芸デザインに一石を投じたタウトの存在に迫る一冊。
