Epistemology Editorial Review
Making It Explicit: Reasoning, Representing, and Discursive Commitment in Second Printing Edition, by Robert Brandom, is a challenging but rewarding book that aims to explain the workings of language without relying on traditional concepts of reference and representation. Brandom bridges the gap between semantics and pragmatics, accounts for the behavior of indexicals, explains the nature of logic, and describes the cognitive effects of language on its interlocutors. Although the writing is difficult to follow and arguments are sometimes unclear, Brandom's unique and stimulating views are heavily influenced by Kant, Frege, Wittgenstein, Michael Dummet, Wilfrid Sellars, Donald Davidson, and John McDowell. The inferential structure of content, analyzed as being identified inferentially (inferential role semantics), contains three levels - propositional, sub-sentential conceptual, and conceptual content of non-repeatable tokenings of linguistic expressions. Making It Explicit is not an easy read, yet anyone who has the opportunity to read it will come out enlightened and enriched. Readers should be familiar with the work of at least a couple of the philosophers mentioned above and analytic philosophy of language in general before delving into the book. **
