$148 velociraptor 500 gb and $177 samsung SSD 500 gb? almost there.
Answer: If you are talking about using the SSD as a C: drive in Windows that does not contain data files that are repeatedly updated, then I would agree. But if you are talking about a drive that will be servicing frequently updated databases and/or data files, then the Velociraptor is probably the better choice. -
Question:
WD says I can use (2) config as SATA Raid 0. Has anyone tried this? Performance / reliability? Does the heat sink get very hot w/ full load?
Answer: You can use RAID 0 for faster access on data sets that are mitigated as acceptable if they are lost. However, if you want to mix it up consider RAID10 (1+0) instead if you need a volume with some redundancy and no need for parity. -
Question:
Why does it cost more than a 1tb ssd?
Answer: The Velociraptor is a very high end drive, and to pay one buck a year for this kind of reliability is a no-brainer. The Velociraptor is better for frequent and heavy updating, compared to SSD. If the Velociraptor fails, the data is still there and it may very well be possible to recover most or all of it, depending on the failure mode. -
Question:
Will this work with an external eSata Hard Drive Dock? Does the heat sync interfere with connecting it or will it get too hot for the dock?
Answer: It will fit in my Thermaltake Black Widow. It does not appear to feel any hotter than an WD Caviar Black 7200rpm drive during operation. -

If I clone my old drive to the Velociraptor, use a 120GB SSD for my OS, will I have to delete the cloned OS?
Answer: As long as you don't have both OS drives on your computer at the same time, you should be fine. -

is this drive faster than a SSD?
Answer: No, it is not faster than an SSD. It is faster than most HD's but only about 1/2 as fast as an SSD. It is a highly reliable drive though. -
Question:
Noticed a 6.0gb Buffer to host transfer rate. My mobo is Asus Rampage iv Black. Will this work on an the 6.0 ASMedia 6.0 SATA port (not RAID'g) it?
Answer: SATA is weak in a few areas as compared to SCSI, but it is probably compatible. -

Answer: It came formatted and ready to go if that's what you're asking. But for my own personal reasons I always format any new hard drive I buy.
