Victoria Aveyard All Books Editorial Review
Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard is a dystopian novel set in a society divided by blood. The rich and powerful Silvers have magical powers, while the poor Reds have no special abilities. Mare Barrow, a Red, discovers that she too has powers, which is unheard of for a Red. She is then thrust into the court of the Silvers, where she becomes embroiled in intrigue and must navigate a complex web of relationships. The world-building is initially slow but picks up once Mare reaches court, leading to nonstop action and a wide range of characters. The motivations of each character drive the story and create compelling narratives. Although the book received a lot of hype, the reviewer has mixed feelings about it, particularly in regards to the lack of chemistry between the main character and her love interests. They also find Mare to be naïve and the middle of the book to be slow. However, the reviewer appreciates the ending, which saves the book and earns it a three-star rating.
