John Christopher Action & Adventure Kids' Books Editorial Review
In the "Tripods" series, "The City of Gold and Lead" is the second installment. It is a thrilling book that will keep readers on the edge of their seat, just as the first book did. Will, Beanpole, and Henry are preparing for the games with the hope that one of them will be chosen to enter the Tripod's city, where they can escape and provide vital intelligence to the human resistance. The games are held far to the north, and the winner of each event is taken to the city as a servant. To infiltrate the city, representatives of the resistance need to be trained to win, and Will and Beanpole, along with another boy called Fritz, are selected. The book's first half mirrors the first book closely, but the story takes a darker turn when Will and Beanpole reach the city, and the horrors of the Tripods' rule become clear. The description of the boys' time in the city is incredibly vivid and inventive. Christopher's descriptions of the alien landscape are just as vivid, and the story leaves the reader wanting to know what happens next.
